Mine Geosciences Internship

About the role

This internship offers a hands‑on introduction to geotechnical engineering within Newmont Suriname’s Merian mining project. You will work alongside experienced geoscientists to develop practical skills in data analysis, reporting, and slope stability monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in preparing weekly geotechnical reports, ensuring data accuracy and completeness.
• Support bench reconciliation by comparing design plans with actual excavation results.
• Review slope monitoring data to identify trends or anomalies under supervision.
• Interpret basic piezometric and geotechnical datasets to aid team analysis.
• Maintain organized records of geotechnical data and follow documentation standards.
• Contribute to monitoring and reporting processes that ensure slope stability and operational safety.
• Help identify and escalate potential geotechnical risks through data review.
• Apply fundamental rock‑mechanics and slope‑stability principles to promote safe practices.
• Adhere to all site safety, environmental, and geotechnical procedures.

Required profile

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mineral Geosciences, Mining or a related discipline at Anton De Kom Universiteit van Suriname.
• Preferably in the second year of study or later.
• Academic exposure to rock mechanics, soil mechanics or geotechnical engineering is advantageous.
• Strong performance in mathematics, engineering analysis and technical subjects.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for basic analysis and reporting.
• Ability to analyse and interpret datasets with guidance.
• Willingness to learn geotechnical software tools.
• Attention to detail and strong analytical/problem‑solving abilities.
• Effective written and verbal communication for technical contexts.
